Term 3, Week 9, 2022
Dear Families,
Since our last newsletter we have heard news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II, after whom our wonderful city of Elizabeth was named. No matter our view on the Monarchy vs Republic debate, the story and impact of Queen Elizabeth II on the world is simply remarkable. To reign for so long and to be in the spotlight every day for all that time would have been simply demanding and draining. Yet she always struck me as a person of wisdom, integrity and respect, without really showing any sign of the demanding nature of her work. For the past two weeks her story has dominated the media and we have learnt so much about her that we probably didn’t know previously. One of our school’s Mercy values is that of Service and the Queen certainly lived a life of service which was clearly visible for us to admire, acknowledge and reflect upon. It raises the questions for me of ‘what service am I being called to’ and ‘how will I be remembered?’.
On Tuesday of this week we enjoyed the Science Bubble show organised by Mrs Tullio. The children had a great time observing and learning all about the science of making bubbles of different sizes. This was followed up with our Science Experiment Day on Friday. Thank you to our Year 5/6s for making this a great day for everyone.
Today the NAPLAN results for our Year 3 and Year 5 students arrived and have been sent home with the children. These tests are conducted annually for Year 3, 5 7 and 9 students across the country and provide some useful information for our students, families and teachers about student learning. Good luck to our Year 4 students who are completing the reLAT (Religious Education Literacy Assessment Test) this week.
This Monday night, 26 September, some of our senior students will sing at the Festival Theatre as a part of the annual Catholic Schools Music Festival. This is a showcase of the various music programs that happen in our South Australian Catholic Schools. Besides the 400 students on stage as a part of the Festival Choir, there are many other students doing solos or playing various musical instruments. It is an excellent show and we wish Chelsey, Deakin, Lisa, Maddie, Ruby, Teresa and Taeylor all the very best for this exciting and special occasion.
Next Wedneday we will celebrate ‘Mercy Day’. This is when we acknowledge the work and ‘charism’ of the Sisters of Mercy who founded St Mary Magdalene’s and St Thomas More Schools. They provide us with the important values of Compassion, Courage, Hospitality, Justice, Respect and Service that we hold dear and reflect upon regularly within our school.
Last week Esther Feast, our OSHC Director, accepted a new position in the south east of the state and will be taking leave from St Mary Magdalene’s School for 12 months. While sad for us it, is a great opportunity for Esther and her family and we wish them well as they make this change to country living. Jen Firth will be Acting Director during Term 4.
I would like to wish Lisa Daniele all the best as she takes some leave to travel. We welcome Charli back on to the front desk in Lisa’s absence. Lisa will be away from school for the last week of this term and the first three weeks of next term.
I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday. I hope you are able to have some quality family time together. Please remember that school resumes on Tuesday 18 October as the Monday is a Pupil Free Day due to the staff being engaged in their annual ‘Staff Reflection Day’.

Liturgical Events and Special Celebrations
International Day for World Peace
Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. It is a day when individuals, communities, nations and governments highlight efforts to end conflict and promote peace. The theme for 2022 is End Racism, Build Peace. Students and staff have, or will, take the opportunity during morning prayer to reflect on this theme. We all have a role to play in fostering peace. And tackling racism is a crucial way to contribute.
Mercy Day
Please join us in Week 10 on Wednesday September 28 as we celebrate Mercy Day and the Sisters of Mercy, with a whole school liturgy at 9.30am in the Yarning Place.
Sacramental Program
We congratulate Eugenio and Stella on the celebration of First Eucharist and the completion of their Sacramental journey.
We thank Edna Dumbrell from the Elizabeth Catholic Parish for leading this program through the year.
Classroom Learning
During Week 8, 3/4 SS and 5/6 AT celebrated a class liturgy on the theme Service. They reflected on the story of the Mustard Seed from the Gospel of Matthew and students shared examples of the small acts of service that they complete that lead to big things.
After 7 years of being at St Mary Magdalene’s School I sadly have to inform you that I will be leaving the school community. My family and I have purchased a house in the South East and I have been offered and accepted a position at St Anthony’s OSHC as their new Director.
The time that I have spent at St Mary Magdalene’s has been amazing and I am very sad to be leaving you all. I have met some amazing people, staff, parents and students.
I am really going to miss everyone and the amazing community that we have here.
Thank you all for your support and encouragement throughout the years, it is greatly appreciated and I couldn’t have fulfilled the role to the best of my ability without it.
It is with the greatest of hope that we, one day may meet again but in the meantime, know that I pray for you, your families, staff, and friends that God holds you in the palm of his hand and that you will be forever in our hearts.
Kindest Regards
Esther
Science Week at St Mary Magdalene’s School Celebrations
Typically celebrated in Term 3 between the 12th and 20th of August, students this week will be partaking in several events related to having science at the heart of our learning.
Students enjoyed the wonderful, engaging, and exciting Scientific Bubble Show hosted by Marty Mc Bubble on Tuesday afternoon, where they learnt about the science of bubbles. Students were introduced to the processes of conducting an experiment, specifically related to bubbles and how to make a hypothesis.
Some of the comments after the shows…
“The scientific terms he referred to were interesting – transparent, iridescent”
“It was funny when people went in the bubbles”
"I found out information about the bubble and what is inside them”
“It was interesting when he talked about gravity and helium and the differences between them”
The students also expressed that they…
Enjoyed it!
Would have him back 😊
It was so cool!
On Friday the 5/6 students will be hosting an experiment day in the Yarning Place. Students in other year levels will be able to participate in some safe experiments with the 5/6 students as well as explore the Habitats that the Year 3/4 students have been working on during their learning.
I hypothesise that it will be a great day!!!
